It’s a question we get asked by prospective agents all of the time –
I know – not the clear cut answer you were looking for. But here is why:
There are a few factors to consider when joining the industry:
- What are your goals?
- Do you need immediate income for your family?
- What are you expectations?
We know – it’s not the bright and sunny answer you were looking for.
But it is honest.
To really answer if now is a good time to enter the travel industry you need to understand how the industry works.
Travel Advisors make money from earning commissions from suppliers to book your vacation. The caveat is that most commissions are not paid until AFTER the travel has taken place. There are other streams of revenue an agent can build into their business model like Service Fees, etc; however, if a majority of your business income comes from collection commissions, but your clients can’t travel currently, then you have no current revenue streams. Period.
You do, however, still have expenses that incur as a result of running your business.
So the long answer? If you have the time to invest in setting up your business foundations, you don’t feel rushed to have doors open and consistent income tomorrow, and have a long term mindset – yes. The travel industry is a GREAT industry to work in. And has SO MUCH long term potential.
Regardless of how you enter the industry, when you are an independent contractor, you are an entrepreneur. And it takes time to stand up your business and build up a consistent client base. If you are willing to invest your time and money into that endeavor, then this is the place for you.
